New leadership for AWE

AWE Management Limited today announced the appointment of Ian Tyler as its first independent Chair to the AWE ML Board and Iain Coucher as the new Chief Executive of AWE Plc.

The appointment of Ian Tyler is the first time an individual from outside the three shareholders, Serco Group plc, the Lockheed Martin Corporation and Jacobs Engineering Group, has been selected to Chair the organisation and will further ensure AWE continues to deliver a safe, secure and efficient nuclear warhead programme. Ian takes up his new role with effect from 24 February 2016.

Also announced today is the appointment of Iain Coucher as the new Chief Executive of AWE plc to lead the day to day management, operation and maintenance of the UK nuclear warhead programme. Mr Coucher succeeds the current Managing Director, Kevin Bilger who will be returning to Lockheed Martin in April at the end of his secondment to AWE. On his appointment, Iain Coucher said:

“I am delighted to be able to build on the work already in progress under Kevin’s stewardship, to deliver transformational change across AWE that will ensure the organisation continues to deliver against the customer commitments and do so effectively and efficiently. This is a unique and hugely important programme and I’m excited by the opportunity.”

Ian Tyler added:

“AWE is a nationally important asset and key to Britain’s defence. I am extremely honoured to be appointed as its first independent Chair and look forward to supporting Iain Coucher in delivering the programme of transformation on which AWE has embarked.”

Current AWE ML Chairman John Holly, who will also return to Lockheed Martin from April, said:

“Given the unique and important nature of AWE’s work, the Board was keen to appoint individuals with extensive experience of leading large, complex organisations and managing major strategic infrastructure programmes. We are confident that the appointments of Ian Tyler and Iain Coucher will ensure that AWE continues to deliver on its mission to support the UK Government’s Continuous At Sea Deterrence. The Board and I would also like to thank Kevin for the significant contribution he has made to AWE plc throughout his secondment.”
