Bhavna, Project Manager

Degree : MSc in Chemistry

I started my career at AWE as an Analytical Chemist working in the Materials Certification team. The job entailed a range of responsibilities within the materials and environmental areas. I spent the first few weeks shadowing a competent member of the team, until I felt confident to undertake the work on my own. I had a lot of support from the rest of the team members.

As I spent more time working on the different materials, my confidence grew within the team and this allowed me to network within other areas of the wider business. When starting with AWE, I came with five years practical experience and an MSc in Chemistry and I wanted to gain some professional qualifications.

I enrolled onto the Chartered Chemist (CChem) accreditation, which I gained successfully after two years. Since being at AWE, I have achieved a number of accreditations – NVQ Level 5, NVQ Assessor (level 1-4), Chartership in Science, Schools Mentor, CChem and MRSC Mentor for The Royal Society of Chemistry.

My progression within the company has gained me a variety of valuable skills. I was promoted to the role of a Technical Authority after three years in the Analytical Chemist role, and now am a Team Leader for the Materials Characterisation Team – where I manage a large portfolio of work and line manage seven members of staff.

There have been a lot of development opportunities within the company and the support to progress my career at AWE. There is great flexibility to move within the different areas of the business should you want a new challenge.
