Doug Freund, Director Production

Doug is Director Production at AWE responsible for development, manufacture, and production activities and accountable for the safe, secure, on-time delivery of all systems required for its core mission. Continuously improving business performance through an ethical, professional and one-voice company culture. For the past year at AWE, he was the Deputy Director of Production. He has 30 years’ experience in engineering design, systems engineering, operations, facilities logistics, and manufacturing.

In his previous role he was the Deputy Director at the Eastern Range Site for Lockheed Martin Space Systems in California for Fleet Ballistic Missile Program. Whilst there he managed facility engineering activities for both nuclear weapons security projects and nuclear weapon processing facilities across the US and UK along with directing support equipment activities (design, manufacture and maintenance) at the Eastern Range in Florida.

Prior to Lockheed Martin, Doug was at General Electric’s Aviation Group (formally Smiths Aerospace, plc) where he was the Director of Programs for Landing Gear and Thrust Reverser products in both the US and Europe. Prior to General Electric, Doug was the Vice President of Products for Invensys Plc responsible for new product development of consumer electronic products in the US, Europe and Asia.   Doug began his career with the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory working on various nuclear weapon and power plant projects. A retired Air Force Reserve Officer with twenty-two years of combined active duty and reserve service in support of the US Air Force’s F-16 conventional and nuclear weapon (Europe) system program.  Doug additionally served in Iraq for six months. He was responsible for Kirkuk Air Base where he supported activities with multiple agencies, local authorities and directed the development of strategic plans and programs.

Doug is highly experienced with comprehensive understanding of aerospace and defence industries. He has proven ability to manage both nationally and internationally in the US and UK built on sound leadership in program, project management, nuclear facility design, construction, manufacturing and operations. He led the strategic initiative for the Navy’s Strategic System Program (SSP) securing future budget ensuring SSP’s nuclear facilities, plant and infrastructure meet both present and future needs of the program. As Deputy Director at Eastern Range, he improved design, manufacturing and processes of Fleet Ballistic Missile Program support equipment via a paperless design and manufacturing system resulting in a savings of $5 million per year without impacting scope and meeting program requirements. He successfully led the efforts for the Navy Base nuclear and capital projects for a Limited Area Production Support Complex at Bangor, Washington, Explosive Handling Wharf 2 at Bangor, Washington and a Strategic Weapons Ashore US/UK test facility at the Eastern Range, Florida. All delivered on time and within budget.

Doug has a Master’s in Business Administration, with an emphasis in project management from Capella University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado. Doug is experienced in Program Management, GE Lean Affordability and Six Sigma.

Doug is married to the former Colleen Bradbury and they have three children. Stephanie is a Human Resource Business Partner at DynCorp.   Lisa is business manager at Marriott. Jayme works various jobs as she continues her pursuit of a business degree at Eastern Florida State College.
