As Director Strategy and Communications, Susie leads the development of AWE’s corporate strategy, working with internal and external stakeholders. She is also responsible for internal communications and engagement, external communications including stakeholder management and marketing, corporate responsibility and our community programme, as well as press and media relations.
Previously, Susie has led strategy development and joint government change initiatives, both in the UK and overseas. In her 16 years with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, she worked on a variety of subject areas. She was posted to Islamabad in Pakistan shortly after 9/11 and to Jakarta a few years later, where she ran a capacity-building programme with the Indonesian government tackling transnational crime and boosting regional cooperation on border security. She also worked in Whitehall on the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review and on other multi-stakeholder challenges.
Before the Foreign Office, Susie worked for several years in print media and publications, including for Blackwells and Nuffield in the UK, and an enjoyable stint as the Features Editor of the ‘Prague Post’. Earlier still, in a different life, Susie completed a PhD at Oxford in music theory and analysis and occasionally earned money as a cellist.
Susie is committed to bringing diverse minds together on important problems, to inclusive working practices and to good governance. She has been a pension Trustee and governor of a large international school. Her two daughters were both born overseas and educated in a fairly random mix of environments, but are now both studying at UK universities. Susie has recently moved to Berkshire from London; she loves getting out into the countryside, travelling, doing up old houses, and scuba diving.
