Delivering engineering masterclasses

AWE is working with the Royal Institution to deliver engineering masterclasses

The Royal Institution has been running engineering masterclasses for six years, slowly spreading around the UK. The series are set up in partnership with a variety of organisations,  AWE joined the series in 2015.

As part of their training, AWE graduates have designed all the classes, based on a number of scientific and engineering principles.

Over thirty students from schools across Berkshire and Hampshire were involved in the first series of six ‘technical’ master classes designed to help inspire the next generation of engineers. During a six week series they covered Newton’s laws, aerodynamics, wind turbines, materials and their properties, and systems engineering.

Schools participating in the first series included The Costello School, Basingstoke; Kendrick School, Reading;  St Gabriel's School, Newbury;  Park House School, Newbury;  The Hurst Community College, Baughurst and Highdown School, Reading.

AWE scientist Jenny said that organising the series had been great fun:

"The students were incredibly exciting to work with and asked some challenging questions, which showed they'll have a bright future if they choose careers in science, engineering or technology."

Student - Callum, a Year 9 pupil at the Hurst, agreed:

"It was definitely an enlightening experience of science in the real world. I hope to pursue a career as a cosmologist or in astrophysics."
