Sian Butler, Director Assurance & Risk

The role of Director Assurance & Risk maintains independence from the operations of the company and has specific accountabilities under our arrangements with the MOD.  In addition, the role provides confidence to our regulators and shareholders that we are holding ourselves to account for the safety and integrity of our products, our systems and our facilities.

In her 30-year career at AWE Sian has worked in both the Stockpile and Nuclear Threat Reduction programmes and has experience of maintaining safe operations as an ‘Authority to Operate’ and Licence Condition owner.

Previously Sian was Head of Materials and Analytical Science, running the team that provides scientific expertise covering the full range of materials in the UK’s nuclear deterrent and their properties over their whole lifecycle. In addition the team delivers technical services to demonstrate legal and regulatory compliance, assuring that operations at AWE do not cause harm to our people, our facilities or our environment.

Sian joined AWE in 1988 after receiving a degree in Chemistry from Cardiff University. Working initially as an Analytical Radiochemist in AWEs Dosimetry Service.  During this time she also completed an MSc in Radiation and Environmental Protection at Surrey University.

After 4 years she moved to a role within Nuclear Threat Reduction. Predominately focussed on providing technical support to national contingency plans for incidents involving radioactive/nuclear materials. She also served as an Emergency Manager trained to manage the response to unplanned occurrences at the AWE sites.

After spending 15 years in NTR she changed focus to directly support the stockpile programme. As a Team leader within Hydrodynamics she built and led a team involved in the design and delivery of explosively driven experiments.

Sian then moved to the Site Function. She had a wide range of accountabilities including Facility Management, soft and hard services provision, delivering of Site Utilities and leading the AWE Skills academy (which delivers our Apprentice Programme). She is passionate about developing AWEs people capability with a particular interest in encouraging future generations and promoting the role of Women in Science Technology, Engineering and Maths.  Sian is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry,

Sian is married to Gary. They have 2 children and live locally to the AWE site.
